How does your program work?
We offer both private instruction and group classes. Students taking private lessons sign up as a full time (a half hour lesson once a week) or part time student (lesson every other week) student. Group classes run weekly and can be registered for here. For Private Lessons you can call us to enroll or come to our Introduction to Singing class every Saturday 2-3pm.
Can I just try one lesson and see if I like it?
We encourage students to commit to at least two months of lessons. In two months you will notice that you are approaching your voice differently and feeling stronger! We offer a monthly introductory group class for students interested in the studio, but who are not sure they want to commit! This class covers the basics of the Speech Level Singing Technique and answers questions about how lessons are conducted. We welcome students of all ages to attend the class and learn more about our program. You can register for the monthly Introduction class here. We invite you to come to the studio any time and meet our instructors and listen to some lessons taking place!
What if I want to discontinue lessons? Do I have to give notice?
Yes. There is a two-month minimum for all lessons/classes. One-month notice from the first of the month is required to discontinue any lessons/classes. Cancellation must be done in person and will not be accepted over the phone. Cancellation must be done with the Studio Coordinator and NOT the teacher. Cancellations accepted after the 5th of the month will count for the next month. Example: If you turn in notice on Nov 15th, you will be charged for December in full. To withdraw from lessons/classes a parent or adult student must; 1. Inform the Studio Coordinator in person. 2. Complete and sign a withdrawal form provided at the front desk. Simply not scheduling lessons or canceling your payment does not constitute a cancellation of lessons request.
Can I pay per lesson instead of signing up as a reoccurring monthly payment?
Unfortunately we do not. In order for our instructors to focus on student concerts, training and to provide the best voice instruction possible we require every student to abide by our student policies and procedures. You may, however, take a drop in lesson time to time for an increased lesson fee.
I am interested in switching my instructor at the studio. I am afraid this will be weird... how does this work?
We encourage you to discuss your situation with the Studio Coordinator to see if we can address the situation. However, we have an “open door” policy at the studio, this means that all the Instructors know and are ok with a student moving to another instructor. If you wish to switch instructors for any reason at all there are two things that must happen; 1) Inform the Studio Coordinator that you are interested in switching to another Instructor. 2) Fill out a new Student Registration | Automatic Payment Consent form. Please keep in mind that instructors charge different fees and your fee might increase if you switch to another instructor.
Why get singing lessons if i sing really well?
The vocal cords are like muscles and with proper training you can get a lot more out of them when they are trained regularly. With age and improper use your vocal cords can become sore, developing nodules which could end a career. Speech Level Singing® (SLS) will get you through these hazards safely and unleash all of your potential.
How often should I take lessons?
It is recommended that students take at least a half hour private lesson once a week. Students looking to excel quickly are encouraged to take 2 half hour lessons a week.
Is it true there are vocal coaches damaging voices?
Sadly, yes. A bad vocal coach can lead a singer into physically harming their vocal cords. The good news is that in many cases the damage can be undone. The other problem is teaching bad habits can prevent a singer from maximizing their vocal potential. A lot of voice teachers teach a disconnection from the chest voice or head voice causing students to reach for low notes and reach for high notes. The best singing is the refusal to help the pitch and sing connecting from the very bottom to the top!
I have never had a voice lesson... Is that ok?
Many beginning students have made a lot of progress in their voice in just a few lessons. Our goal is to make concepts easy to understand so that you can start applying the new techniques right away.
What ages and styles do you work with?
All ages and all styles. Since we teach “how to sing” rather than “what to sing” students find freedom in being able to sing whatever they like!
Will lessons change my unique sound?
Absolutely not! We train singers to sing easily and clearly through their entire range. It is very important to keep things that makes you sound unique, however sometimes choices singers make are damaging to the voice, and it is our job to make you aware of them.
