4 Things Every One Should Know Before Starting Singing Lessons.
There are 4 important things to know before selecting a studio that teaches singing. The examples below clear up common misconceptions about singing and should help you understand why The Voice Training Studio is the best choice in Vocal Education.
1) Not all singing lessons are taught correctly.
In order to build a lasting singing voice that can be used in any musical style or genre, a singer must build a connection from the very bottom of their voice to the top. Most teachers teach students to sing ONLY in the chest voice or ONLY in the head voice. This is incorrect and limits the singer’s ability to build range and have the flexibility to sing in any style and causes vocal damage over time. There are a high percentage of teachers who DO NOT know how to establish a connection from the chest voice to the head voice.
All of our Instructors teach students how to sing clearly and effortlessly from their chest voice to their head voice without cracking, flipping, yelling or any change in tonal quality. The Voice Training Studio requires all teachers to become certified in Speech Level Singing, the industry standard in professional vocal technique.
2) Good singing is NOT ALL about the diaphragm and breathing.
Proper breathing as well as an understanding of how the diaphragm works while singing is important; however, it is never the reason why you cannot hit those high notes you’ve always wanted to. You have heard it all before: “Give it more support”, “You need to work on your breathing”, “You have to learn how to use your diaphragm”, “Sing it like a laser beam”.
Most singing teachers emphasize and base their instruction on the idea of “supporting sound”. They teach you to strengthen the diaphragm so you can sustain and hit high notes. This instruction is wrong. Why? They are forgetting about the function of the vocal cords! The vocal cords are designed to resist airflow and when they do, they vibrate and make sound. The vocal cords are tiny (about the length of a finger nail) and can only resist approximately 2 watts of energy; your diaphragm, however, is able to produces up to 200 watts!
Most teachers miss the mark on how the vocal cords function. The method we teach at The Voice Training Studio is used by over 130 Grammy award winning artists. This technique prolongs a singer’s voice so that it can be used for a life time! This technique is used in repairing vocal damage and rehabilitating “broken” singers.
3) You are probably not “tone deaf”; anyone can learn to sing!
We hear it all the time, “I’m pretty sure I’m tone deaf”. Being tone deaf often doesn't refer just to poor hearing, but also to poor singing. But bad hearing is not always the cause of bad singing; it is actually just one of three possible causes for singing out of tune.
1.Bad Hearing:
Yes, bad hearing (tone deafness) might be at fault, but poor control of the vocal system is another factor. In other words, even if you can hear the note, you still might not be able to produce it.
2.Inability to imitate:
Second might be an inability to imitate: you can hear the sound and you know what sound you want to produce, but you can't combine the two—just as a baseball player might see a pitch and know how to swing the bat, but still strike out.
3.Memory:
Third, it might be that some singers have bad memory: between the time they hear a song and when they sing it back, they forget the notes.
This can be corrected by understanding how the voice works by using a series of scales and vowel consonant combinations. The Voice Training Studio has a great track record of working with singers who could not carry a tune who end up leading a band, or producing a record. Most students start noticing results immediately.
4) Why are you doing that exercise?
An effective training system is important to get quick results and maintain good vocal health and technique. When you are doing a singing exercise there should be a good reason for doing that exercise. Our studio uses a logical approach to training voices, never will you hear us ask you to sing it like a laser beam or pretend there is a magical cone of sound coming out of your head. As funny as that sounds, thousands of voice teachers use that approach in their training.
